Demanding the arrest of a marriage hall owner in Perundurai and the sealing of the hall for allegedly refusing to rent out the venue to members of a Scheduled Caste community, members of the Samuga Needhi Makkal Katchi staged a flash protest in front of the Collectorate here on Monday (March 9, 2026).
On March 3, K. Rani and her family members from Koorapalayam village in Nasiyanur approached the owner of a marriage hall near Anna Silai on Bhavani Road in Perundurai to book the venue for a wedding reception for her 23-year-old son on March 15. However, after learning about their community, the hall owner, Ravi, reportedly refused to allow them to hold the function. Based on her complaint, the Perundurai police registered a case under Section 3(1)(zc) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. However, the owner is yet to be arrested.
On Monday, party members, led by its founding president Vadivel Raman, arrived at the Collectorate and staged a flash sit-in protest on the road. They raised slogans demanding that additional sections be included in the case and that the owner be arrested immediately. They also demanded that the marriage hall be sealed permanently. Police personnel held talks with the protesters, after which they submitted a petition to the district administration.
