A section of residents of Kannimarthoppu in Srirangam blocked the road in protest on Sunday demanding that they should not be evicted from their place of stay as they had been residing there for long. Police sources said a group of about 50 residents sat on the Panchakarai Road junction in the morning to express their protest against the proposed move to evict them. A Tiruchi Corporation official said notices had been served to the residents by the civic body recently. Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister Ramesh, who was returning from a function at Srirangam, reached the spot and held talks with the protesting residents. Following the talks, the residents dispersed. The Minister later told the media that the issue was pending before the court and immediate decision could not be taken.
