The expansion of Delhi’s metro network will ensure safer and easier daily travel for women commuters, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two new metro corridors and laid the foundation stone for three metro lines in the Capital.

Ms. Gupta said the Delhi government has worked in “mission mode” over the past year to launch welfare initiatives for the poor and the working class.

The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress attacked the BJP-led government over its “unfulfilled ₹2,500 monthly allowance promise for women”, saying that even after one year there is no sign of implementing the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana.

AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said on International Women’s Day, people across Punjab, Delhi, and the rest of the country are watching whose poll guarantees will translate into reality.

He said the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government in Punjab had fulfilled “Kejriwal ki Guarantee” by implementing the ₹1,000 monthly aid scheme for women while Mr. Modi “remained silent” on the BJP’s election promise of ₹2,500 for women in Delhi.
