Sixteen motorists were penalised for driving under the influence of alcohol during a special vehicle-checking drive conducted by the Chittoor traffic police.

Acting on the directions of Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Dudi, the operation was supervised by Sub-Divisional Police Officer T. Sainath and led by Traffic Inspector G. Nitya Babu.

The offenders were produced before the First Special Judicial Magistrate of the Second Class Court on Monday. The court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on each accused, totalling ₹1.6 lakh.

Police officials warned that drunk driving is a grave offence which endangers the lives of motorists and other road users. They said enforcement drives would continue across the district to curb violations.

Under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a first-time offence attracts a fine of up to ₹10,000 or six months’ imprisonment, or both. Motorists were urged to strictly follow traffic rules and prioritise road safety.
