CABIN JOHN, Maryland – One of the largest sewage spills in U.S. history has turned into a political fight between the federal government and local officials.

A sewage line recently collapsed in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, spilling at least 200 million gallons of raw sewage into the Potomac River, a key waterway surrounding the nation’s capital. The spill has caused widespread public health concerns as E. coli bacteria is at dangerous levels in parts of the Potomac, and underscored the risks posed by aging sewer infrastructure.

Now, President Donald Trump is getting the federal government involved while blaming local Democrats in Maryland for the spill, including the state’s Democratic Gov. Wes Moore. But the responsibility for the sewer line doesn’t rest with just one municipality.

Here’s what to know about the spill.
