Tension prevailed at Ramaiyanpatti near here on Monday as the residents attempted to block the road at Ramaiyanpatti intersection in protest against the TASMAC’s move to open a liquor shop in their area.

As the TASMAC has reportedly decided to open a liquor shop in the midst of MGR Nagar, Kalam Nagar and Kandigaiperi, all under Ramaiyanpatti village panchayat, construction of the shop on a private land is reportedly going on despite resistance from the locals. The residents of MGR Nagar, Kalam Nagar and Kandigaiperi say that the proposed liquor shop, reportedly coming-up on the road being largely used by the girl students going to schools and the colleges and the women, would create unsafe environment for them.

Even though a petition objecting the decision to open the liquor shop in Ramaiyanpatti village panchayat had already been submitted with the District Collector and the police, no step had been taken to drop this proposal, allege the villagers, who attempted to block the road near Ramaiyanpatti intersection on Monday morning.

The agitation was suspended after Ramaiyanpatti panchayat president David held talks with the villagers and assured them that he would take-up due steps to stop the opening of the liquor shop in the village panchayat.
