It's not a countryOfficially, Russia is banned from the Olympics because Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina, there will be no Russian flags, no Russian anthems and no Russian national colors incoporated in the competition. (The same holds true for Belarus, which has supported Russia in the war.)But there will be athletes with Russian and Belarussian passports competing as "Individual Neutral Athletes," or AINs for short, if they meet specific conditions. That contingent will include 13 Russians and seven Belarussians, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Jan. 29. The Americans weren't as accurate as the Swedes, putting together a shot success percentage of 73% to their 83%. But the margin was much closer in take-outs, with a 70% shot success metric for the U.S. and 72% for Sweden.Thiesse and Dropkin's second-to-last stone of the eighth end had too much power behind it, sliding past the button. Which meant their last stone had to be perfect. It did knock the Swedes' red stone off the middle, but they had the final stone of the game. — Payton TitusRead more about the gold medal match for Dropkin and Thiesse here.Ashley Farquharson makes history for Team USA in Olympic lugeCORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy – Ashley Farquharson became the second American woman ever and first in 12 years to win an Olympic medal in luge Tuesday. She finished third in the women’s single event at the Cortina Sliding Center with a time of 3:31.582. The U.S. figure skater made his Olympic debut Tuesday, Feb. 10 in the men’s short program, fulfilling the lifelong dream of his parents, former skaters Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova. Vadim and Evgenia were among the 28 figure skating coaches, young athletes and parents killed who were returning from a development camp. After delivering an emotional performance inside the Milano Ice Skating Arena, Naumov held up a picture of his parents in the kiss-and-cry section as he waited to hear his scores. Before a skater begins their program, a message from them is displayed on the Jumbotron inside Milano Ice Skating Arena. His message was, "Mom and Dad, this is for you."He was the second skater of the 29 scheduled to compete on the day, and Naumov was clean in his program, starting it off strong with a quad Salchow. By the end of it, he earned a score of 86.65, a season-best. — Jordan MendozaSkier Alex Hall had a harrowing wait to win silverAfter his third and final run, U.S. freestyle skier Alex Hall knew he’d be waiting on fate. But he didn’t wait on the judges. He’d fallen in that last try. Hall knew his only score that counted was his second score, and he also knew that score wouldn’t be enough for him to repeat as Olympic gold medalist in men’s slopestyle. But the silver? Maybe."It's like a weird, mixed emotion,” Hall said. "You don't want to celebrate when someone doesn't land, but in some regard, you are happy that maybe you have a better chance at the podium now. But I think I can speak for everyone: We're always rooting for each other." − Gentry EstesLive updates: USA vs. Canada in women's hockeyHockey fans have had Feb. 10 circled on their calendars since the 2026 Winter Olympics women's hockey schedule was released. The USA women's national hockey team battles Canada in a preliminary matchup, marking the latest edition of the nations' rivalry and a possible preview of the gold-medal match. Wow! What a special moment. Yes, in the circumstances, an extension is perfectly fine. I'd say focus on the competition right now, and submit it directly when it is done," Satzewich wrote in an email reply shared by the university. Schizas told The Canadian Press she didn't think the email would "blow up" as much as it did and she was planning on sitting down in the Olympic Village on Tuesday to write her midterm for the class. She's set to graduate from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Arts in Environment & Society later this semester. − John LeuzziWhy are so many Olympic medals breaking?Several Olympians have broken medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and the list is growing longer.Within the first week of competition, at least six athletes broke their medals after their events. That list includes the USA's Breezy Johnson, Alysa Liu and Jackie Wiles, Swedish cross‑country skier Ebba Andersson, plus Dutch skater Jutta Leerdam and German biathlete Justus Strelow."It's definitely heavy. Heavier than I expected," Johnson said after winning the women's Olympic downhill. "I think that's maybe why it broke."According to The Guardian, the cords on the medals are fitted with a breakaway mechanism. It's reportedly required by law. The medal's built-in system is designed to release if it gets pulled by any force. Ultimately, the design is meant to keep the athletes from choking. The Olympic committee appears to be aware of the problem and working to address it. − Meghan L. Elizabeth Lemley and Olivia Giaccio finished second and third, respectively, and Tess Johnson came in ninth. The top 10 automatically qualified for finals. − Chris BumbacaUtah governor urges Olympic reporters to stick to sportsUtah Gov. Spencer Cox chided reporters at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Tuesday when asked about President Trump calling a US athlete “a real loser’’ and political division in the United States.“I hate the questions you ask the athletes," Cox said at a press conference in Milan about the 2034 Winter Olympics that will be hosted in Salt Lake City, Utah. "These are kids out there competing. I think you should be asking them about their sports and about their competition and let the politics take care of the politics."Hunter Hess, an American freestyle skier, was asked in a press conference Feb. 4 about representing the United States at a fraught time that includes ICE agents killing two protesters in Minnesota during immigration raids. Hess said he had “mixed emotions” and it was “a little hard."Trump lashed out with a Truth Social post, writing in part that Hess was “a real Loser.’’Cox, a Republican, sidestepped controversy when asked if Olympic athletes were losers.“Look, we love our athletes and we’re grateful for our athletes,’’ he said. “We recognize there are lots of divisions in our country and in our world today and I love that we get to live in a country where people get to speak their minds." − Josh PeterSchiffrin falters in team combined; Wiles/Moltzan win bronzeJacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan upstaged their Olympic champion teammates, Breezy Johnson and Mikaela Shiffrin.Wiles and Moltzan won bronze in the women's team combined event on Tuesday, Feb. 10. It failed to make the final, faltering in the semifinal due to a fall. The U.S. actually had an early lead thanks to some quick work from Kristen Santos-Griswol. But like in the quarterfinals, Corrine Stoddard fell on lap No. 12, and this time she wouldn’t get bailed out. It set the team back tremendously and the gap was too far to recover from. The finish is similar to what happened in the inaugural event in 2022, when the U.S. was penalized in the semifinal and prevented itself from contending for a podium finish.Team USA finished in last place in the event and will skate in the Final B, meaning they will not have a chance at a medal and is just racing for standings. — Jordan MendozaTwo Americans advance to men's moguls finalsLIVIGNO, Italy — Two Americans advanced to the finals during the first stage of qualification of the men's moguls at Livigno Aerials & Moguls Park, with Nick Page (fifth, 77.50) and Dylan Walczyk (seventh, 76.67) finishing above the cutline in the top 10.The two other U.S. skiers in the field – Charlie Mickel (11th, 75.31) and Landon Wendler (12, 75.08) – barely missed qualifying initially, but they can still advance through the second stage.Japan's Ikuma Horishima was first in qualifying with a score of 85.42, nearly six points clear for the rest of the field. Of the 30 athletes in the qualifying, Team USA comprised four of the top 12.The men's moguls finals will be Feb. 12 in Livigno. — Gentry EstesTeam USA squeaks by in mixed team relayTalk about a last second of hope. The U.S. looked done in the short-track team relay when a slip by Corrine Stoddard on the tag dropped it all the way in last place.
