In the five months since we’ve learned that Bad Bunny is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, we’ve seen conservative meltdowns of epic proportions, allegations that Bad Bunny would be performing in a dress (fingers crossed), and a tearjerking teaser hinting that Benito’s performance would center global unity. Now that we’re just a day away from witnessing what could be the most iconic Super Bowl halftime show of our lifetimes, there’s still one huge issue casting a shadow over Benito’s upcoming performance that we simply can’t brush off. That issue, of course, is ICE. As if we weren’t all on edge already, a big digital billboard in San Francisco, the city where the Super Bowl is taking place, is displaying a blatantly pro-ICE warning. Located in the mega touristy Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood, the billboard reads, “Defensive Player of the Year: ICE.”It appears that the group behind the billboard is called American Sovereignty, a mega conservative organization made up of ICE stans claiming to want “secure borders,” and allegedly spending millions of dollars on ads to rally public support for ICE across North Carolina, Michigan, Georgia and D.C., per Fox News. Even if this is just a billboard funded by some rich weirdos, the fact that it’s been allowed to be openly displayed in one of the most visible parts of the city feels like some sort of sinister warning shot.Keep in mind that the NFL has insisted, several times during the past few months, that ICE would not be at the Super Bowl. If that’s true, which it very much could be, then what’s up with the giant ICE propaganda flashing on a screen in what is essentially the Times Square of San Francisco? All we’re saying is, there’s already a lack of confidence among immigrants that they’ll be able attend the game with any peace of mind. We’re can’t ignore what Trump officials themselves have said, including an explicit threat back in October made by DHS advisor Corey Lewandowski, who said that the Super Bowl would not be a ‘safe haven’ for undocumented immigrants. That was a claim we might have dismissed as fear-mongering a few months ago, but it would be unwise to do so now. For the past two months, we’ve all witnessed the horror of ICE terrorizing Minneapolis and federal agents killing two American citizens in the process.ICE has made it abundantly clear that they’re not afraid of breaking any rules, including the Constitution. On top of that, it seems that the Trump administration is bent on instilling widespread fear and making ICE’s presence known. We wouldn’t be surprised if ICE ends up showing up at the Super Bowl, even if it is just to prove their point as loudly as possible. The growing concerns about ICE continue to raise the question of where Bad Bunny falls in all of this mess. In an interview, Bad Bunny told us that part of the reason he didn’t visit any mainland U.S. cities for his DTMF Tour was because he was worried that the concerts would be used as obvious places where ICE could find, round up and arrest immigrants. He faced widespread criticism within the community when he agreed to the Super Bowl Halftime gig — what was the difference between that and touring in any other city on the mainland, many Latine Americans wondered?Although Bad Bunny has loudly responded to backlash from conservatives, he hasn’t publicly vocalized anything specific regarding the backlash he’s received from the Latino community about his Super Bowl performance. As much as we love Bad Bunny, the fear of ICE showing up at the Super Bowl is real. We can all celebrate and recognize that this performance will present a huge symbol while keeping one foot firmly rooted in reality. After all, it’s still up to us to keep our own communities safe.
