A cancer awareness and support meet was organised in the city in connection with World Cancer Day on Wednesday.
Hosted by GEM Hospital, the event aimed at promoting cancer prevention, encouraging early detection, and extending emotional and social support to cancer survivors and their families.
The programme brought together healthcare professionals, survivors, caregivers, and members of the public for an impactful day of awareness and engagement.
C. Palanivelu, founder-chairman, GEM Hospitals, highlighted the magnitude of the public health challenge posed by cancer. According to the latest estimates by the Indian Council of Medical Research, India records over 14 lakh new cancer cases every year, with nearly 50 per cent detected at an advanced stage, significantly reducing survival rates.
“Early detection can save lives, reduce treatment costs, and improve quality of life. Awareness programmes like these are essential to bridge the gap between symptoms and timely medical consultation,” he said.
