You may be planning to spend a little more on your sweetheart this Valentine's Day. If so, you're not alone – consumer spending on this year's expression of affection is expected to exceed $29 billion, a record.
Overall spending on Valentine's Day gifts this year is projected to rise 5.7% to $29.1 billion, with candy being the leading choice of gift-giving shoppers. Consumers are "budgeting a record $199.78 on average for gifts," another record that will exceed the previous one of $196.31 in 2020.
That's according to the National Retail Federation's annual survey of the holiday, which notes that spending won't be restricted to significant others, but will include friends, coworkers – and pets.
