The Delhi Assembly on Tuesday sent a report of the Committee of Privileges to former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and three other senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders who had allegedly overseen the inauguration of a “fake” ‘phansi-ghar (execution room)’ on the premises of the House in August 2022.
The committee had tabled its report in the Assembly on January 6 during the Winter Session. It recommended that the House take “proper action” against Mr. Kejriwal and the three senior AAP leaders in connection with the inauguration of the phansi-ghar when AAP was in power.s
Speaker Vijender Gupta had alleged that crores of rupees were spent on the “fake phansi-ghar and its advertisement” by the previous AAP government. He had referred the matter to the Committee of Privileges for an inquiry, following which Mr. Kejriwal and the others were summoned.
Mr. Kejriwal and the three other AAP leaders did not appear before the committee on two occasions last year while it was probing the allegations.
AAP had termed the summons “legally untenable” and stated that the committee “cannot act on matters related to the previous Assembly”, citing a Supreme Court judgment.
