The impending arrival of a major winter storm has much of the U.S. playing the waiting game – waiting for snow, ice, frigid temperatures and possible power outages.

Heavy snow was expected from the southern Rockies and Plains to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with some regions expected to get at least a foot of snow. To the south of the regions where the heaviest snowfall is expected, "significant sleet accumulations of 1-3 inches is expected," the National Weather Service said Saturday.

Areas with freezing rain forecast include the southern Plains, lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, the NWS said.

The storm will bring accumulating snow to "a 2,000-mile swath" of the U.S. through early next week, with some spots getting more than 2 feet, according to Accuweather forecasts.

"What makes this storm especially dangerous is the duration of impacts. Some locations could endure 24 hours or more of freezing rain, ice, or snow," said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski in a statement.
