A major winter storm taking shape in the southwestern United States is forecast to bring heavy snow, freezing rain and sub-zero temperatures from New Mexico to New England over the next few days.
On Thursday, Jan. 22, over 130 million people were under weather alerts for snow, sleet and freezing rain, while 106 million are under alerts for cold temperatures, which extend from the Southwest through parts of the South, up through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast, the National Weather Service said.
"This will be a large and potentially historic storm, with major impacts over a very large area (more than 2 dozen states)," said AccuWeather meteorologist Bob Larson in an email to USA TODAY.
Several U.S. states, including Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, have also declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm.
