A lorry carrying gas cylinders collided with an electric pole and overturned into a roadside pit near Sivaganga here on Saturday.
According to police, a gas cylinder bottling plant is located near Ilayangudi in Sivaganga district. A lorry carrying gas cylinders from the plant was heading toward Ponnamaravathi in Pudukkottai district. While passing through Oothikulam, the vehicle rammed into an electric pole on the roadside. In the impact, the lorry overturned into a nearby pit, causing the gas cylinders to scatter across the area.
Local residents rescued the injured driver and admitted him to Sivaganga Government Hospital. A major disaster was averted as the power supply was cut off when the electric wires snapped during the collision. There was no gas leakage from the cylinders and they were later transported in another vehicle.
The Sivaganga Taluk police are investigating the incident.
