Four persons were injured in a fire that broke out after an LPG cylinder leak in a house near Ponneri, which collapsed in the explosion. The residents of the house, a couple, sustained severe injuries in the fire and were admitted to a hospital in critical condition. A woman and her son living nearby also suffered minor injuries.
The incident occurred at Upparapalayam near Ponneri in Tiruvallur district. The injured couple, Mani and Devi, are daily wage labourers. While Mani works as a labourer, Devi is employed at a tailoring shop. On Friday morning, while Devi was cooking, gas reportedly leaked from the cylinder and caused an explosion.
In the accident, the house collapsed, and both husband and wife sustained serious injuries. Members of the public immediately rescued them and rushed them to the Ponneri Government Hospital with the help of a 108 ambulance. Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police officials conducted an investigation at the spot.
The impact of the explosion was felt in neighbouring houses as well, with window panes shattering. Debris from the collapsed structure injured Anita and her son Yashwanth, who live next door. Both sustained facial injuries and were treated at a hospital.
