Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said federal law enforcement’s handling of Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s killing of Renee Good echoes their handling of two similar situations in the Chicago area.
“Well, what happened in Minneapolis is a tragedy. And it’s one that we have seen twice, at least, in Chicago and in the Chicago area,” Pritzker told CNN’s Jake Tapper on an episode of “State of the Union” on Sunday. “Each time, DHS Kristi Noem and her assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, have put out statements within minutes, usually ― maybe within the hour, putting facts forward.”
“At the beginning, we didn’t know what the facts were because there weren’t cameras on the situations, but then witnesses came forward, and we found out what really happened in both those situations,” he added.
In one situation in September, an ICE agent shot and killed Silverio Gonzalez Villegas, who was reportedly unarmed and had not been convicted of any crimes aside from traffic offenses. The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Villegas attempted to run over the ICE agents, but a New York Times analysis contradicts that claim.
In another situation in October, Border Patrol agent Charles Exum shot Marimar Martinez five times. Martinez survived the shooting, but DHS accused her and Anthony Santos Ruiz of being two of several protestors attempting to “ambush” the agents.
