Christophe Vasseur is always on the move – literally. On Rue Yves-Toudic in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, the baker, wearing a crew-neck T-shirt, apron and a smile on his face, bustled back and forth in front of the large carriage entrance at number 34. To the left stands Du Pain et des Idées, his corner bakery, with Art Nouveau woodwork and glass-painted ceilings, listed as a historic monument.
This Parisian bread temple has drawn people from all over the world for more than 20 years. To the right, behind two large picture windows, is La Table, his new eatery opened in the fall. The space comes alive from dawn with coffee (from the Coutume coffee shops) and pastries, but truly takes on its full character at lunch and dinner.
At sunset, just minutes before the evening service, the owner still moved briskly from one spot to another, arms filled with trays and utensils, radiating a joyful energy. He moved a chair, adjusted a light bulb and greeted a regular. He is at home here, and by extension, so are you.
