City Police Commissioner Shankabratha Bagchi on Friday inspected a demonstration of a remote-controlled lifebuoy at the YMCA Beach premises. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Ch. Manikanta accompanied him and explained how the device works.
Mr. Bagchi said an assessment by the city police had identified about 16 vulnerable points between Bheemunipatnam and Appikonda beaches where drowning incidents had been reported in the past. He said the police planned to deploy such remote-controlled lifebuoys at all these locations to prevent further mishaps.
He added that caution boards, public address systems and police personnel would also be deployed at these points to discourage people from entering the sea unsafely. In the event of any mishap, rescue teams would ensure an immediate response by deploying the lifebuoys, he said.
“Our foremost aim this New Year is to make Vizag’s beaches the safest,” the Police Commissioner added.
