With Telangana turning its attention towards making roads safer, the Transport Department on Wednesday rolled out its 31-day plan that entails enforcement and awareness activities during National Road Safety Month 2026. The initiative, which is part of the Centralised Road Safety Action Plan, will witness implementation at the district level.

On the enforcement side, the programme seeks to encourage two-wheeler rider and four-wheeler driver safety by emphasising helmet and seatbelt compliance. Given that two-wheelers are used by college students, the department will engage with them. This will also include an enforcement component of penalising offenders.

Thrust on driving slow and carefully by underscoring regulation of speed on highways, main thoroughfares and bylanes will be discussed on social media and radio. Checks against overloading of goods and passenger vehicles, and monitoring of driver licensing and fitness norms will also be done.

Special attention will be paid to accident-prone black spots, with joint inspections by police and Roads & Buildings officials to identify engineering deficiencies and initiate corrective measures. Educational institution buses and public transport vehicles will undergo regular inspections for mechanical fitness, seating capacity and safety equipment, while drivers of autorickshaws, taxis, RTC buses and heavy vehicles will be engaged through refresher programmes on safedriving, passenger behaviour, fatigue management and accident prevention.
