Relatives of a woman and her stillborn baby at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Wednesday raised concerns over the treatment provided and refused to receive the mother’s body.

The woman, Sangeetha (32), wife of Annadurai (38) of the Amman Kulam Housing Unit in Puliyakulam, was admitted to the hospital on December 22 while six months pregnant. She underwent a Caesarean section on December 24, during which the baby was stillborn. The woman died on Tuesday (December 30, 2025) night.

According to family members, Sangeetha, who already had two children, had conceived nine years after undergoing a sterilisation procedure following the birth of her earlier children.

The relatives alleged that proper treatment was not provided and declined to receive the mother’s body. They later protested at the Collectorate.

District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar told The Hindu that the hospital would follow the required procedures regarding the allegations surrounding the death and that the department would provide necessary support, if required.
