In addition to deploying special squads to check for drinking and driving, the Mangaluru City Police will station special task forces to prevent violence and harassment against women and children during the New Year celebrations in the city. These measures will be in effect across the Commissionerate limits starting Wednesday evening, December 31.
City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy issued a stern warning against driving in an inebriated state, noting that individuals caught drinking and driving would be booked under relevant provisions of the law, and that the vehicles involved would be impounded.
The Commissioner further stated that the police would act strictly against those indulging in wheeling and drag racing. Stringent measures would also be initiated against anyone harassing women or children during the revelries, he added.
There will be a strict ban on alcohol consumption, narcotic drugs and smoking in public places, including bus stations, railway stations, roads, parks, and beaches, he said. He added that any immoral activity, such as indecent dancing or gambling, under the guise of New Year celebrations would not be allowed.
Organisers of events where liquor would be served should ensure that individuals under the age of 18 are not permitted entry, the Commissioner said.
