Wads of currency notes concealed in a two-wheeler were confiscated by the police from a motorist bound to Kerala at the Velanthavalam Check Post in K.K. Chavady police limits here on Tuesday.
The motorist, identified as Shafik (38) of Malappuram, was overpowered after a chase when he had reportedly attempted to escape. Wads of cash amounting to ₹56.5 lakh were recovered from beneath the vehicle’s seat, from an enclosed portion inside the petrol tank. Since there were no supporting documents, the police confiscated the cash and handed over Shafik to the Income Tax Department for further enquiry.
Preliminary inquiry indicated that Shafik was an employee of a jewellery unit, and that he was returning with the cash after sale of jewellery. However, he could not provide a break-up account and had no supporting documents.
