Director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, who were found dead Sunday at their Los Angeles home, spoke candidly in the past about their relationship with their son Nick, who has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The parents, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2015, said they wished they could go back and do things differently in helping Nick, now 32, as he struggled with addiction and rehab programs.

“The program works for some people, but it can’t work for everybody,” the late director said while discussing “Being Charlie,” the film he made with his son about a teen struggling with drugs and stints of homelessness.

The family spoke about their troubles in getting Nick help starting around age 15, and how they wish they had handled certain elements of trying to find him care.

“When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen,” Rob Reiner said. “We were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”
