The Tamizh Desiya Periyakkam has exhorted the Election Commission not to issue elector photo identity card (EPIC) to people from other States in Tamil Nadu by including their names in the voter list.
Addressing the media here on December 13, periyakkam president P. Maniarasan said attempting to legalise the movement of people from one linguistic domain to another by way of issuing EPIC to them negated the objectives of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956.
Claiming that the chances of around seven lakh migrant workers out of 42 lakh people who had been disenfranchised in Bihar getting included in the Tamil Nadu voter lists were inevitable, Mr. Maniarasan said such a development would have a cascading effect on the prospects of the people of Tamil Nadu in various fields such as politics, education, employment, and so on. It would also pave the way for imposition of Hindi on Tamil people.
In order to bring pressure on the Election Commission democratically in this regard, the periyakkam would be holding a demonstration in Thanjavur on December 16 in support of its demands, he added.
