An Italian former chief traffic cop got life in jail Thursday for murdering a former colleague and lover.
The Bologna Court of Assizes sentenced Giampiero Gualandi, the 64-year-old former commander of the local police of Anzola (Bologna), to life imprisonment.
Gualandi was found guilty of the aggravated voluntary manslaughter of his fellow police officer Sofia Stefani, 33, with whom he was having an extramarital affair.
The Court, presided over by Judge Pasquale Liccardo, issued the verdict after seven hours of deliberation.
Deputy Prosecutor Lucia Russo had requested a life sentence, while Gualandi's defense requested that the crime be upgraded to manslaughter.
