India, the world’s third-largest methane emitter, faces mounting pressure to act on agricultural emissions as a new UN report warns that global methane levels are still rising despite improved projections for 2030. The Global Methane Status Report, released on November 17 by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) at COP30 in Belem, shows that while progress has been made since the Global Methane Pledge was launched in 2021, the world remains far from meeting its target of cutting methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by the end of this decade.
Julie Dabrusin, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Co-Convener of the Global Methane Pledge, said, “This report is a crucial assessment of our progress and a key indicator of the work that’s required to meet the Global Methane Pledge goal. In just four years, we have made improvements, but we must continue to drive faster, deeper methane cuts.”
