The call to action came at a time when London is facing a rare red heat health alert.Temperatures in parts of the UK are expected to record such highs that schools have been partially closed. “London is not just calling, its cooking,” Guterres said. Addressing the London Climate Action Week at the historic Guildhall in the city, Guterres framed the moment as a “tale of two crises” — an accelerating climate change and an energy system still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. At the heart of Guterres’ speech was the global methane initiative. Methane is responsible for one-third of global warming and around 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over the short term, and rapid reductions could deliver measurable cooling within a generation, he said.Guterres also spoke about artificial intelligence and the climate cost of building data centres. He warned that the expanding data centres were consuming vast amounts of electricity, water and land. He proposed an AI Environmental Transparency Initiative, calling on AI firms to disclose their carbon, water and land footprints and commit to powering all data centres with renewable energy by 2030.
