President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning went on a freewheeling social media blitz as he faces his first big election test since returning to the White House.
In the space of a few hours, the president meddled with food aid, stirred up the New York City mayoral race, made dubious claims about California’s redistricting vote and championed abolishing the filibuster. He also jabbed at a long-standing media foe.
His scattershot interventions came as millions of voters cast ballots in state and local elections, including a pair of competitive races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia and the contest to run the nation’s largest city.
Trump looms large over the off-year elections given his pitched battles with governors and mayors as he’s sent National Guard troops across the country and pushed a crackdown on immigration.
Voting comes as the president’s approval rating has plummeted in a series of polls, with many of the elections seen as a referendum on Trump’s job so far.
