Freeze warnings and frost advisories were active across a vast swath of the central and eastern United States, with temperatures dipping into the low 20s in some areas, forecasters said.

The cold weather advisories stretched from northern Kansas and eastern Nebraska to parts of North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland, according to the National Weather Service. Some warnings were active Thursday, Oct. 23, while others were set to begin Friday, Oct. 24.

Forecasters in Wisonson, Illinois and Iowa warned of temperatures around 27 degrees through the next few days, with some areas experiencing temperatures closer to the teens. Parts of North Carolina, western Virginia and West Virginia could see temperatures as low as 25 degrees.

"Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing," said the weather service office in Milwaukee, which warned of temperatures reaching 27 degrees.
