A man was killed and his son severely injured in a clash over fishing rights at Perumpallam Dam in Erode district on Saturday night.

The police said Ayyappan (52) and his son Madesh (30), from K.N. Palayam, were attacked by Sakthivel (51) and his relatives, Soundararajan (24) and Gautham (23), after a quarrel over fishing at the dam.

The police added that only 14 persons, including Sakthivel, were authorised to fish in the area, and the dispute arose when Ayyappan and his son allegedly tried to fish illegally.

The confrontation occurred around 9 p.m., when Sakthivel and his relatives, who were on night watch duty at the dam, confronted Ayyappan and Madesh. In the altercation, Soundararajan and Gautham reportedly attacked them with sharp weapons. Ayyappan died on the spot, while Madesh suffered multiple injuries.

Witnesses alerted the police, and Madesh was first admitted to Sathyamangalam Government Hospital before he was referred to Erode Government Medical College Hospital in Perundurai for further treatment. Ayyappan’s body was sent for post-mortem.
