The campus of the University of Calicut at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district has been indefinitely shut down in view of the clash between two groups of students related to the departmental students’ union elections held on Friday (October 10, 2025).
A release quoting Vice-Chancellor (V-C) P. Raveendran said on Saturday (October 11, 2025) that classes would be suspended until further orders. All the students’ hostels would also be closed down, and residents had been asked to go home. The step was necessary to restore peace and to save students from violence, the release said.
This follows the clash between activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the United Democratic Students’ Front (UDSF), a coalition of the Kerala Students’ Union and the Muslim Students’ Federation, during the election to the students’ union representing various departments on the campus held on October 10. The counting of votes, which began in the afternoon, was disrupted by the evening following arguments between the students. It could not be resumed even after 7 p.m. Thereafter, the V-C directed the officials to suspend the declaration of results and seal the ballot boxes. The clash began after UDSF activists alleged that some of the ballot papers did not have the signature of the presiding officers.
