Election to the university students’ union in the University of Calicut (CU) will be held on August 7. The results will be declared on the same day.An order from the Dean, Students’ Welfare, said on Tuesday (June 30) that Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran has accorded sanction to issue notification for the election on July 8. Preliminary electoral roll would be published on the same day. Final electoral roll would be published on July 16. Last date of filing nominations is July 25. The final list of nominations will be published on July 28.Meanwhile, the V-C has decided to appoint a committee of senior college teachers to study and report on the remedial steps to be taken to improve the conduct of college union elections, as envisaged in the Lyngdoh Committee report. This follows the Election Grievance Cell of the university finding irregularities in the conduct of the college union elections in the previous academic year. The matter would also be placed in the Syndicate to decide on what action should be taken against college officials who “violated the election process” and “caused serious problems on the campuses”.The V-C had earlier directed the Dean of Students’ Welfare to get reports from all colleges on whether ballot papers bearing serial numbers had been used during the union election. However, many colleges did not submit the required reports within the stipulated time-frame. The grievance cell also found that most of the colleges which conducted the elections had used ballot papers without serial numbers, contrary to the provisions in the election bye-laws.Though elections conducted in all such colleges are liable to be declared null and void, and fresh polling should ordinarily be ordered, it is no longer practical to do so as the academic year has already concluded. So, it was decided to hold the university union elections excluding the university union councillors elected from colleges where the election process had been declared illegal by the grievance cell.
