The Golden Rock Railway Workshop at Tiruchi has received the ‘Green Shield’ under the Environmental Efficiency Shield category from Southern Railway headquarters for the year 2024-2025.The award was given at the Vishist Rail Seva Puraskar 2025 ceremony held during the 70th Railway Week celebrations in Chennai on Tuesday. Southern Railway General Manager R. N. Singh gave away the award to Chief Workshop Manager S. K. Patro. The award is given annually after evaluation by a duly constituted committee by Southern Railway among railway workshops in the zone. This is the 13th time that the Golden Rock Railway Workshop has bagged the award since winning it in 2009.The award was given based on the overall environmental performance of the Golden Rock RailwayWorkshop in the field of cleanliness in handling and disposal of various wastes generated; efficiency in effluent waste treatment adopted; efforts taken on creating and upkeep of trees and greener landscape; efforts on carbon footprint reduction; energy conservation measures adopted and preventive steps in mitigation of air pollution.A few distinct environmental features of the workshop among many that made it fit to bag the award included Bheema bamboo plantation for carbon sequestration, use of compressed bio gas for metal cutting to substitute fossil fuel, adoption of ultrasonic detector for compressed air leakage to conserve electrical energy and platinum level certification in GreenCo rating by CII, a press release said.
