ultibillion-pound plans to build a series of new “super batteries” around Britain have taken a step forward after Ofgem selected dozens of projects to be eligible for a new subsidy scheme.
The long-duration electricity storage (LDES) projects are designed to address the growing challenge of managing intermittent wind and solar power, preventing surplus energy from going to waste and saving it for use when supplies are scarce.
The proposals range from flooding valleys in Scotland, to pumping compressed air into a salt cavern under Teesside, as well as different types of battery chemistries.
