The Government Railway Police, Tiruchi have arrested five persons - in the age group 18-22 years - in connection with the death of a 21-year-old engineering student of Anna University, Tiruchi.

The victim K. Mariswaran was a third year Computer Science Engineering student of the University and had been staying at a mansion near the institution. His body was found between Kumaramangalam and Keeranur railway stations near Tiruchi on Saturday night.

The Government Railway Police, Tiruchi recovered the body and sent it for autopsy to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital at Tiruchi and launched investigation after recovering a suicide note from the spot.

Railway Police sources said Mariswaran came into contact through the social media platform with Ilangovan - the main accused. Ilangovan and the four others were alleged to have sexually harassed the victim and extorted money from him which prompted Mariswaran to take the extreme step of ending his life. The arrested persons were remanded in judicial custody.

The Government Railway Police which initially registered a case under section 194 of the BNSS subsequently altered it under section 108 (1) BNS (abetment of suicide).
