1. Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire
With hidden trapdoors, spy holes and secret staircases, you can easily lose yourself, and your sense of time, in this 15th-century tower house — one of Scotland’s largest. The magnificent former seat of Clan Fraser has the added bonus of offering up fresh produce gathered from the estate’s walled garden, served up in the newly refurbished tearoom.
