A two-year-old girl died in hospital after police rushed to her house following 'welfare concerns'.

Officers attended a property in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, at approximately 4.20pm on Saturday, TeessideLive reported.

The little girl was transported to hospital but passed away there, with her death being treated by Cleveland Police as 'unexplained'.

Detectives have begun investigating the incident and a woman, 25, and man, 21, have been arrested in connection with the girl's death.

The force confirmed on Sunday evening that they had retained a presence on the street in Thornaby on which the girl was found.
