Organs harvested by doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) from a 26-year-old man who had been declared brain dead, helped to save lives on Saturday.
According to an official release, the patient from Thanjavur district had been admitted to the Emergency Department of MGMGH on September 11 with grievous head injuries caused by a road traffic accident.
When the patient did not respond to treatment, he was declared brain dead in the early hours of September 13. Upon being counselled, the bereaved family agreed to donate the organs of the deceased.
As per the norms of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan), the government hospital’s surgeons harvested the deceased patient’s corneal tissue, liver, kidneys and skin.
In an operation led by nephrologist Jayaprakash Narayan on Saturday, a team of doctors, under the guidance of S. Kumaravel, Dean, K.A.P.V. Government Medical College, transplanted one of the harvested kidneys to a 26-year-old patient at MGMGH, who had been undergoing dialysis for the past three years and was enrolled on the Transtan waiting list.
