The Excise department has issued a stern warning to liquor outlets following complaints on sale of alcohol to children below 18 years of age in Puducherry.

A release from the Office of Deputy Commissioner (Excise) said that of late complaints were received about liquor being sold to children below the age of 18 years. There were also complaints about allowing children inside the premises of hotels, restaurants and serving them liquor along with their parents or relatives. The outlets serving liquor should display a message in English and vernacular language on the premises that alcohol would not be served to children below 18 years, the release said.

“Sale of alcohol to children below 18 years of age is a punishable offence under the Puducherry Excise Act, 1970. There should be strict compliance. Any violation will be viewed seriously and strict action will be taken in accordance with the provisions stipulated under the Puducherry Excise Act and Rules, 1970,” the release added.
