Istat said Wednesday that food prices in Italy were 30.1% higher in July this year than the average level of 2019.
Although this is a massive rise, the national statistics agency said the increase was actually lower than the EU average.
It said the increase was mainly the result of "the sharp spike recorded between the end of 2021 and the first months of 2023 and the subsequent continuation of a significant, albeit more moderate, upward trend"
