Jet fuel flows via the Suez Canal are under renewed threat after Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeted an oil tanker shortly after it left Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu refinery. Monday’s strike marks the first time a vessel has been attacked so far north in the Red Sea. The Iran-backed group has been targeting commercial vessels around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait since November 2023 in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. It has also carried out direct attacks against Israel, including at its Ben Gurion airport. The Liberian-flagged Scarlet Ray was 40 miles offshore Yanbu and heading to China with 142,000 barrels of undisclosed fuel onboard, likely gasoline, when it was hit.
