Federal safety regulators are investigating nearly 300,000 Chrysler minivans over reports of steering malfunctions that officials said could lead to a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Monday, Sept. 8, announced it opened an investigation into some Chrysler minivans after reports of problems with the vehicles' electric power steering.

The probe covers an estimated 287,000 vehicles, according to the NHTSA, and the investigation was prompted after the agency received nearly 100 complaints related to the minivans' steering issues.
