Abu Obeida, the spokesman of Hamas' Qassam Brigades, was killed in a Saturday strike on western Gaza City, Al Arabiya and Al Hadath reported, citing a Palestinian source.

The IDF and Shin Bet security service said Saturday that they had attempted to assassinate Abu Obeida in a drone strike targeting Gaza's Rimal neighborhood.

A military source told Haaretz that Abu Obeida was the target of the attack, and that the results of the attack are currently being examined.

Medical sources in Gaza said that five people were killed and several were injured in the attack, which hit the lower two floors of a residential building in the neighborhood.

The IDF said that "numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence."
