A woman in France has been fined £100 after her cat repeatedly 'miaowed too loudly' on a train.

The white cat, named Monet, was travelling with owner Camille and her boyfriend Pierre, when a passenger complained and the conductor dished out the €110 (£100) fine last Thursday.

The pet was travelling in a pet carrier as required and had its own ticket, which cost €7 (£6).

The penalty fee, which was handed out on a high-speed train between Vannes, Brittany and Paris, has sparked a debate over the allegedly draconian rules on the French railway system.

Those in support of SNCF, the state rail operator, have praised the decision to enforce quiet while critics have claimed the punishment is overly harsh.
