Protests were held at different places in the central region on Thursday by various outfits condemning the detention of the conservancy workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Twelve members of the Makkal Kalai Ilakiya Kazhagam were arrested on Thursday after they attempted to lay siege to the Tiruchi Corporation office condemning the detention of the conservancy workers in Chennai. They were led by the outfit’s district secretary Jeeva. Those arrested were later released in the evening.

Police sources said about 25 members of the Ulaatchi Thurai Oozhiyar Sangam, affiliated to the CITU, staged a demonstration near the Pudukottai Municipality.

A section of the members of the Left Trade Union Council, who staged a demonstration at Kittappa Angadi in Mayiladuthurai, demanding the implementation of the demands of the conservancy workers, were arrested and subsequently released. A demonstration was held at Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district by some members of the Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam on the same issue.
