Tragedy struck at Chittur when two students from Coimbatore were swept away while bathing in the Bharatapuzha river on Saturday afternoon.
Sree Gautam, one of the students, succumbed to his injuries after being pulled out of the river. He died on the way to hospital.
Another student, Arun, is missing. A search is on for him. Two scuba teams of the Fire and Rescue Services are engaged in the search.
Arun is feared trapped in a causeway tunnel after he and his friends attempted to swim despite strong undercurrents. They were among a 10-member team of students from Coimbatore.
The students were seemingly unaware of the hidden dangers beneath the causeway.
