Two students went missing in River Bhavani, after being swept away by strong currents, near Mettupalayam on Tuesday.
The police identified the students as R. Kishore (20) of K.K. Nagar at Mettupalayam and S. Aakash (17) of Shanthi Nagar.
The two students and their seven friends went to the river at Vilamarathur near Nellithurai around 1 p.m. and ventured into the water. The duo was swept away by strong currents when there was a sudden increase in water flow, said the police.
Upon receiving the information, the Mettupalayam police, along with the Fire and Rescue Services personnel, rushed to the spot and carried out searches. They could not locate the missing students as of Tuesday evening.
The police said that Kishore is a second-year student of a private college at Perur, and Akash is a Class XII student of a school at Karamadai.
