More than 15 passengers, including eight women, were injured when an omnibus they were travelling in overturned at Minnal village near Ambur town in Tirupattur on the Chennai - Bengaluru Highway on Tuesday.
Police said that the omnibus from Vijayawada was going to Coimbatore with 28 passengers when bus driver, S. Vijay, failed to notice sand dumped near the work site for the elevated corridor and drove on the mound of sand. He lost control of the vehicle and the bus overturned. The incident happened around 3.30 a.m.
Immediately, other motorists rushed to the aid of the injured persons and shifted them to the Government Taluk Hospital in Ambur town.
They also alerted the Ambur Taluk police, who rushed to the spot.
After initial inquiry, police said the road had turned slippery owing to overnight rain, and this could have been the reason for the driver losing control of the vehicle. A case has been registered and an inquiry is under way. The police have formed special teams to nab the driver of the bus, who is absconding.
