MADURAI: At least six people were killed and 41 others injured in a collision involving a private omni bus and a government bus near Kottampatti in Melur, Madurai district, on Monday.According to police, the incident happened in the early hours of Monday when a Marthandam-bound Omni bus from Chennai was on its way on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway when it was nearing Kottampatti.The bus suddenly took the opposite track and hit head-on with the govt bus, which was bound to Trichy from Madurai, subsequently hitting the nearby bus shelter.The accident resulted in the death of six, including five men and one woman, who were traveling in both buses, and the man who slept on the bus shelter died. 41 people were admitted to Govt Hospital with injuries.On receiving information, police and fire and safety personnel reached the spot and commenced the rescue operation.DIG (Madurai Range) Abhinav Kumar and Madurai SP Devanathan inspected the accident site.A case was registered by Kottampatti police, and further investigation is underway.
