Kerala is likely to receive the first intense spell of rain in August this week, influenced by the upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining south Tamil Nadu. The State will receive heavy to very heavy rain in some regions, especially south and central Kerala, in the first days of the week, along with parts of Tamil Nadu.
According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday (August 2, 2025), an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining south Tamil Nadu at 5.8 km above mean sea level.
Under the influence of the system, strong westerlies or north westerlies are likely to prevail over the Kerala and Lakshadweep area in the lower tropospheric levels. This is expected to trigger some intense spells in the southern Kerala districts in the beginning and then the central Kerala districts along with the Ghat regions of the State.
An orange alert has been issued for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam on Sunday (August 3, 2025) warning of very heavy rains, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram were put on yellow alert, forecasting isolated heavy rains.
